BT in talks to buy mobile group EE

Hatfield-headquartered EE, the mobile network whose adverts are fronted by actor Kevin Bacon, could be sold to BT if sales talks are successful.

Its owners, Deutsche Telekom and Orange, have confirmed they are in "exploratory discussions" with BT over a potential deal. However, they stressed it was "too early to state whether any transaction may occur".

In a statement, Deutsche Telekom and Orange said they "regularly analyse the development of the market in which EE operates, evaluating various strategic options which have the potential to create value for EE's shareholders and strengthen the market position of EE".

The potential deal comes just days after it emerged BT was in talks with Telefonica to buy O2 as it looks to expand its wireless offering in the UK and complement its broadband network.

In October, it was announced that 350 jobs could be lost at EE in a bid to shrink its head office functions. EE was formed through the merger of Orange and T-Mobile in the UK in 2010.
