Eight NE companies in the Top Track 250
A North East car dealer has been ranked as one of the top three mid-market growth companies with the biggest sales in the Sunday Times Grant Thornton Top Track 250.
Newcastle-based Benfield Motor Group sells 11 car brands from 34 dealerships across the North East, Yorkshire, Cumbria and Scotland.
Under chief executive Mark Squires, the third generation of the family in charge since the company was founded in 1957, sales increased 15 per cent to £622m in 2013.
Overall there were eight North East companies recognised on the list, including five new entrants.
The highest placed new entrant was Newcastle-based Ideal Stelrad Group at 64, while Middlesbrough FC chairman Steve Gibson-owned Bulkhaul debuted inside the top 150 at 149.
British Engines (215), Barbour (221) and Jennings (240) were the other new entries.
ScS, which was at 133 last year, moved up to 109, while Kitwave Wholesale Group moved up from 210 to 158.
Will Oxley, practice leader for Leeds and Newcastle offices at Grant Thornton UK, said: "These mid-sized businesses are such an integral part of the UK economy. They continue to thrive and grow, often on an international stage and their achievements are rightly celebrated here in the Top Track 250.
"We listen carefully to them about the barriers, challenges and opportunities that they see and, through our ‘Agents of growth’ campaign, champion policy changes that will help. We think this dynamic segment of the market is starting to find a voice and is being heard."
Top Track 250 was launched ten years ago to recognise the success of Britain’s top-performing mid-market private companies. Since its launch more than 700 British companies have appeared on the league table.
